Abstract

Studies show inequalities due to race and diminished social support hinder psychological
maturation and education achievement for minoritized youth. Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a
lens can examine the impact of racial discrimination and diminished support experienced in the judicial system and education system. This exploratory study uses quantitative ethnography (QE) and epistemic network analysis (ENA) to address the impact of diminished social support and racial discrimination present during the Central Park 5 case. Results show race and diminished
social support were the foundation of the Central Park 5 case and concludes with action steps supporting minoritized youth. Findings indicate that the United States (US) education and juvenile justice system (JJS) must find impactful ways to support minoritized youth
development.
