Engaging Latinx Families in STEM Education: A Longitudinal Intervention Study

Sat, April 26, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 203

Abstract

Given the underrepresentation of Latinx individuals in STEM fields, this research focuses on examining the effectiveness of a parent intervention designed for parents of Latinx STEM undergraduate students. Using a quasi-experimental design with propensity score matching, the study compared outcomes for Latinx undergraduate students whose parents participated in the intervention against two control groups: parents interested but unable to attend and parents not interested in the intervention. Results showed that the intervention effectively increased parents' STEM values and reduced students' family obligations. The findings underscore the importance of targeted parental interventions in fostering a supportive environment for Latinx students, thereby enhancing their persistence and success in STEM disciplines.
