Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2B

Abstract

In conversation with Givens and Isom’s (2023) work concerning the connections among white, Black, and Native education through the nineteenth century, we reexamine the history and contemporary legacies of Black and Indigenous struggles for educational justice as they have historically intersected with white supremacist forces at the notable Hampton Institute (now University) in Virginia (AERA 2025 Theme). Specifically, our critical review of historiography demonstrates three enduring legacies with roots in the school itself frame the present collective struggle for Black and Indigenous justice in education: (1) legacies of sub/humanity, (2) settler colonialism, and (3) self-determination.
