Defining school safety is complicated and requires moving beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. Because of a multitude of current and, at times, competing agendas from academic research, national directives, and state and local perspectives, diverse streams of information further complicate efforts. This presentation introduces a preliminary, multifaceted school safety framework organized into four key areas (i.e., physical, psychological, procedural, and systematic safety) that are informed by current literature and federal/state legislation. With the engagement of AERA conference attendees, the framework will be further informed and refined for ultimate use as an inclusive and customizable tool for educational leaders, practitioners, and diverse stakeholders across the U.S. and other countries.
