Fri, April 25, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3G

Abstract

This mixed methods study investigates elementary and middle school science teachers' experiences with generative AI technologies. Quantitative data from ICT-TPACK surveys on teachers' planning and technology implementation were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test. Qualitative data gathered through open-ended questioning revealed five themes: no experience, ethical concerns, personal use, student writing, and pedagogy. Significant differences were found between elementary and middle school teachers' implementation practices and AI experience levels. These findings provide insights into integrating AI in science education, addressing barriers, and informing targeted professional development to enhance teaching practices. This research highlights the need for tailored training programs to support effective AI integration in various educational settings.
