Assessing Researchers' Adherence to ITC Translation and Adaptation Guidelines: Application of the Many-Facet Rasch Model

Abstract

Over two decades since the initial publications of the International Test Commission’s (ITC) guidelines for translating and adapting tests, there has been a noted disconnect between recommended guidelines and actual practices. This study used a rubric developed by Hernández et al. (2020) to assess compliance among 235 articles published between the years 2015 and 2020. Results from the many-facet Rasch model showed that 96.6% (n=227) of the studies had performed at an unacceptable rate in implementing the ITC guidelines. Of the 29 rubric items, 25 items were poorly implemented, and many researchers found cross-cultural comparison items more difficult to implement. The results highlight a need for pragmatic and concerted efforts to promote greater publicity of the ITC guidelines.
