Rethinking Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in American Higher Education: An Examination of the Experiences and Perspectives of Minoritized Professors and Administrators

Sun, April 27, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Research shows that even though some spaces within the western academy have been created allowing historically minoritized groups, namely women, people of color, and the LGBTQ community, to study, work, and thrive in higher education settings, academia is still dominated by the standards, ideologies, and practices of White males (Ahmed, 2012; Tillman, 2011). This proposed study aims to explore these timely issues drawing from testimonios (i.e. testimonials) of minoritized professors and administrators across US universities and colleges. Specifically, this proposed study will draw from their testimonios to examine whether or not they have experienced systemic oppression, including microaggressions, within the academy. Findings deriving from this study will serve to contribute to the diversity, equity and inclusion literature base.
