Thu, April 24, 5:25 to 6:55pm MDT (5:25 to 6:55pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This study presents the development and validation of the School-based Racial Stress and Trauma Scale (SRSTS) for Black students. Using a mixed-methods sequential exploratory design, we conceptualized a framework for racial stress and trauma (RST) among Black youth in schools through qualitative analysis which informed the creation of the SRSTS, refined through expert review and cognitive interviews. It captures five key dimensions of school-based RST: overt violence, vicarious racism, negative racial stereotypes, lack of belonging, and unfairness/racial inequity. It distinguishes between institutional and interpersonal factors. Preliminary results indicate strong content validity. Quantitative validation is planned for Fall 2024 to examine psychometric properties of the scale. This tool aims to enhance understanding and intervention for Black students' RST experiences in schools.
