Beyond the Brother Code: Agency and Black Graduate Men’s Subversive Masculinities in Engineering Programs

Abstract

This paper utilizes hermeneutic phenomenology to explore how 17 Black men in graduate engineering programs subvert hegemonic masculinities through agency. Findings offer three typologies of subversive masculinities: (1) rejecting dominant masculine thinking and performing (2) responding to manhood callouts, and (3) responsibility for the subversive self and collective we.
