Empowering CTE (Career and Technical Education) Teachers Through CHOICE: A Teacher-Selected Professional Learning Model

Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Professional development needs of career and technical education (CTE) teachers are complex given differences in teacher preparation, the variety of fields CTE encompasses, and the specialized nature of expertise required. This study seeks to understand CTE teachers’ perspectives of participating in a teacher-directed professional learning (TDPL) program as it relates to their satisfaction with teaching. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach, 241 high school teachers (CTE = 96; non CTE = 145) participating in the Professional Learning by Choice Community (CHOICE) program completed a survey followed by focus group interviews including 39 CTE teachers. Findings indicated that a TDPL program, such as CHOICE, has the potential to promote teacher motivation, satisfaction, and retention.
