Understanding Study Time in College: The Role of Motivation and Time Management Using Experience Sampling Method (Poster 33)

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This study examines the role of motivation and time management on college students' out-of-class study time and duration using the Experience Sampling Method (ESM). Multilevel multinomial logistic regression was applied to a sample of 394 students with 2,241 ESM responses. Our findings reveal that time management skills were positively associated with weekday study habits, while self-efficacy influenced study patterns on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday. Utility value was linked to morning study sessions, and effective time management correlated with longer study durations. Conversely, higher self-efficacy was associated with shorter study sessions. This study provides a more nuanced understanding of students' study patterns and highlights the importance of fostering time management and motivational strategies.
