Addressing Career Technical Education Teacher Shortage in Community Colleges

Sat, April 26, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 702

Abstract

This qualitative multiple case study investigates the shortage of Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructors in community colleges, employing Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory as a framework. Through semi-structured interviews with CTE instructors and administrators across 3 community colleges, the study explores the extent, impact, and reasons for the shortage, as well as recruitment and retention strategies. The research examines how factors at various ecological levels, from immediate work environments to broader societal contexts, contribute to the shortage. Data analysis follows the constant comparative method, with cross-case analysis to identify patterns. Findings aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the CTE instructor shortage phenomenon and inform multi-level interventions.
