Existing asynchronous online discussion (AOD) moderation frameworks lack relevance to current pedagogical needs, particularly regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This theoretical paper analyzes four primary moderation frameworks, revealing critical gaps. We introduce a Five-Stage Framework for Structuring Inclusive and Equitable Moderated Discussions, encompassing: (1) strategic moderator selection and course design, (2) targeted moderator training, (3) collaborative establishment of inclusive engagement norms, (4) proactive DEI instructional strategies, and (5) iterative analysis for improvement. This approach empowers moderators to navigate complex discussion dynamics effectively and create an inclusive learning environment. We offer practical recommendations for implementation, demonstrating how this framework fosters inclusivity and enhances the educational experience for all participants in online discussions.
