Home Literacy in the Digital Age: Impacts of Literacy-Related Digital Activities on Children's Literacy Skills

Sat, April 26, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3D

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of literacy-related digital activities (LRDA) on children's literacy development within the home literacy environment (HLE). Utilizing a cross-sectional quantitative research design, the results from 74 families in the U.S. with children aged 5-7 revealed a high level of engagement with digital activities at home and highlighted the growing prevalence of technology in children's literacy practices. While no significant correlation was found between LRDA and literacy skills, the findings provide experimental references for advancing HLE models, underscore the need for continued exploration of digital technology in home literacy practices, and emphasize the importance of equitable access to digital literacy resources for all children.
