Scaffolding Teachers’ Collaborative Work Online: Supporting Reflective Practice for Student-Centered Teaching

Sat, April 26, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

We report on an online professional development workshop series (with synchronous and asynchronous components) for mathematics teachers designed to create space for teachers to collaborate around what it looks like to do mathematics both as a teacher and in each of their classrooms. Through activities and reflections, teachers examined the alignment between their goals for students and how their classroom routines around mathematics support those goals or could, perhaps, better support those goals. In individual and community mathematical activities, teachers surfaced and discussed the types of problems they give students, the ways they prepare to respond to their students and began to recognize habits (habitus), structures and routines that could be adjusted to better support their goals for students.
