Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

Research suggests that foreign language study has myriad benefits including enhanced cognitive abilities, communication skills, and creativity. German has the third highest enrollment in K-12 education in the United States, but little is known about students’ motivation for German study. Thus, this convergent mixed methods research study utilizes survey (n=125) and interview (n=5) data from students at 12 schools to explore what factors motivate high school students in the United States to initially study German and to continue studying German. The results indicate that students are highly motivated by their enjoyment of the German language and interest in German culture. Students also emphasized the important role of their German teacher in motivating them to continue studying German.
