Caregivers in Recovery: Understanding Experiences of Substance-Impacted Caregivers With School-Aged Children in the Context of the Rural School-Community Relationship

Wed, April 23, 12:40 to 2:10pm MDT (12:40 to 2:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 710

Abstract

This study investigates the experiences of rural caregivers in recovery from substance use disorder (SUD) and their interactions with their children’s schools. Given the high rates of SUD in rural areas and the stigma surrounding it, this qualitative research explores how these caregivers navigate school environments and the barriers they encounter. Using interviews with caregivers, the study identifies key issues such as feeling unwelcome, economic distress, and judgment from school personnel. Findings highlight the need for improved school support and training to enhance understanding of SUD and recovery. The research aims to inform policies and practices to better support these families, addressing the unique challenges faced by rural communities in managing SUD impacts on educational involvement.
