ColabXR: Exploring On-Demand Instruction Within a Collaborative Extended Reality (XR) Learning Environment (Poster 13)

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

ColabXR is a web-based engine that enables computer-supported collaborative learning between multiple clients across laptops, smartphones, tablets, and virtual reality headsets. This quasi-experimental study reports findings from 50 undergraduate participants who learned about the fundamentals of 3D printing as either part of a conventional in-class lecture or as an interactive extended reality (XR) lesson. Participants in the XR treatment could explore a digital twin of a 3D printing lab while viewing and interacting with a 20-minute lesson that was taught by a pre-recorded virtual avatar. The study found participants in the control and treatment groups experiences equivalent learning gains in 3D printing knowledge and no change in 3D design knowledge. Participants in the XR treatment reported higher levels of engagement.
