Abstract

There have been collective nationwide efforts to diversify science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, yet Latinx undergraduates remain underrepresented. Existing studies indicate many factors contribute to this underrepresentation, including a lack of connection with Latinx culture as well as an unwelcoming environment and lack of role models or resources. Given that Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) enroll the majority of Latinx undergraduates, we examined how Latinx cultural aspects are addressed in STEM programs at HSIs by conducting a systematic review of 128 articles. We found that only a few studies addressed confianza, respeto, and familismo. We offer implications to better serve Latinx and other racially minoritized STEM students at HSIs.
