Exploring the Promise of Decolonial Perspectives for Transformative Activist Projects in Educational Contexts

Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

Scholarship within decolonial frameworks has been published across numerous disciplines, including the learning sciences (e.g. Bang, 2017; Bang & Vossoughi, 2016; Maldonado-Torres, 2017; Sonn et al., 2017). Yet, there has been limited exploration of how cultural-historical and Vygotskyan research perspectives share substantial overlap with the goals and assumptions of decolonial projects, even in the decolonial studies within psychology. This presentation aims to extend the conversation on how we can remediate racial injustices in psychology by exploring points of convergence in decoloniality and cultural-historical scholarship. We aim to facilitate a discussion of how decoloniality can inform a transformative-activist approach (e.g. Stetsenko, 2023, 2024) and how cultural-historical research can inform decolonial projects’ attempts to address the coloniality of power.
