Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is a transformative tool for academic writing. Academic publishers, associations, and funding agencies have developed policies to encourage the responsible use of AI. This study aims to assist doctoral students in complying with these new AI usage policies by identifying and synthesizing policies on generative AI use in manuscript preparation and grant proposal writing. A comparative analysis of 20 AI policy documents found that some topics (e.g., authorship) are favored over others (e.g., bias). Additionally, the contents of policy documents differ based on whether the institution issuing the policy is a publisher, academic association, or federal funding agency. This study supports doctoral students, young scholars, and graduate student educators as they navigate academic policies on AI.
