Abstract

Despite keen interest in evidence-based policymaking in education, there is little data available across Canada to help policymakers and researchers make this dream a reality. This paper presents a scoping review of Canadian education-related datasets and an analysis of what is missing. The findings point to a lack of data about how students are supported at school (e.g., student-teacher ratios), while academic outcomes are relatively well-documented. This paper lays part of the groundwork for the Annual Canadian School Survey (ACSS), a new project that will be undertaken by a non-profit research group in partnership with a university-based educational research centre. The purpose of the ACSS is to help understand differences, promote cross-jurisdictional learning, and potentially support pan-Canadian educational change.
