This paper describes the sophisticated rhetorical choices that high school students were making to address their outside-classroom audiences as part of a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) project. As part of their preparations, students discussed the role of humor and the tension between planned and improvisational dialogue. These findings bolster support for student-centered, social justice pedagogies as a way to deepen literacy instruction and student engagement.
