In Poster Session: Computational Thinking and Learning
This study explores integrating computational thinking (CT) with weaving to make CT more accessible, tangible, and engaging. Leveraging the historical connection between weaving and computational practices, the research examines how weaving activities support CT practices such as pattern recognition, algorithmic thinking, decomposition, and abstraction. Nineteen undergraduate students participated in a rope weaving activity, manipulating ropes to simulate patterns, test structural integrity, and connect mathematical principles to tangible materials. We analyzed student reflections and video recordings to examine the application of CT. Findings show that students demonstrated CT practices through the hands-on manipulation of ropes, underscoring the value of tactile approaches. We argue physical manipulation is crucial for understanding key CT concepts, reinforcing the integration of traditional crafts with CT.
