Exploring the Relationship Between Affective Events in the Workplace and Teachers’ Intention to Stay

Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Globally, a major challenge for districts in remote rural areas is a lack of teacher candidates. Utilizing Affective Event Theory (AET) and Conservation Of Resources (COR) theory as frameworks, this research investigated the impact of the crossover between work features, specifically positive and negative affective events for teachers (self-efficacy), on the intention of 1,065 primary special contraction teachers in China to stay in remote areas. The results showed that positive affective events were related to teachers’ intentions to stay, mainly through affect-driven means, whereas negative affective events were related to teachers’ intentions to stay via the mediation effect of teachers’ self-efficacy.
