Abstract

This study introduces the explanatory fully longitudinal mixed methods case study design to address educational research questions using arithmetic Learning Trajectories datasets. The research is divided into three components. The first component, the quantitative phase, selects an exploratory case from a previous study (Clements et al., 2021) to maximize variation in student outcomes. The second component, the qualitative phase, uses an explanatory case study approach to investigate the selected student's learning improvements. The third component integrates the quantitative and qualitative findings, comparing two mixed methods data integration strategies, typology and two-step integration. This study demonstrates the value of combining qualitative insights with quantitative data with this innovative design, enhancing the understanding of educational interventions and their impact on student learning.
