The Role of Professional Development on Career Trajectory and Leadership Practices of Small College Registrars

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3F

Abstract

Higher education faces declining enrollments, financial pressures, and evolving regulations (Aveni, 2019; Kutchner & Kleschick, 2016). Registrars must navigate these challenges, manage technology, ensure compliance, and support student success and curriculum coordination (Lanier, 1995; Lanier, 2006). Despite their crucial role, there is limited research on the impacts of registrars' professional development. This study examines professional development's role in the careers and leadership of registrars at small New York State colleges. Interviews with twelve registrars reveal obstacles such as financial constraints, lack of supervisor support, and time shortages, leading to a reactive approach to development. Highlighting the need for adequate resources and policies, this research shows that investing in registrars' professional development can enhance institutional effectiveness, organizational performance, and student success.
