Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

This study explores the origins and development of interest in history as a professional career. Using a mixed-methods approach, including a survey of 163 history professionals and two focus groups, we investigated key experiences and influences that spark and nurture historical talent. Findings reveal that interest in history grows progressively throughout formal education, peaking in graduate school. Engaging teachers, mentors, and higher education courses emerged as critical factors, alongside hands-on experiences and independent engagement with historical content. The study highlights the importance of early exposure, diverse perspectives, and emphasizing transferable skills in cultivating future historians. These insights inform strategies for talent identification and development in the field of history.
