A Constructivist Approach: Using SWIVL Camera Technology for Preservice Teacher Reflection

Fri, April 25, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 710

Abstract

Our educator preparation program (EPP) adopted the use of SWIVL technology to support pre-service teachers’ analysis, reflection, and improved instructional practice. With SWIVL, complete recordings of instruction are recorded including students’ reaction/response to instruction. Through a constructivist lens, teachers construct their understanding of their instructional practice as they reflect and analyze their teaching, and, based on their understanding of research-supported best practice for instruction, they plan for improved practice. Initial data suggest that reflection is more metacognitive when they use the recordings collected using SWIVL technology than it was previously.
