“There’s So Much You Could Do”: Nonformal PK-12 Learning Environments at Campus-Based Historical Sites (Poster 12)

Thu, April 24, 3:35 to 5:05pm MDT (3:35 to 5:05pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This study explores the potential of campus historic properties as non-formal learning environments for PK-12 students. 4th and 8th-grade teacher participants identified logistical and pedagogical considerations for successful university-based field trips. The findings reveal that attention to logistics, hands-on inquiry activities, a clear, detailed agenda, and integration with academic standards are essential. The study highlights barriers such as scheduling, cost, and accessibility while underscoring how college campuses can act as informal learning environments for young students and foster college readiness early in their PK-12 experiences. The research offers insights for university historic properties offices to tailor their historic sites for educational use.
