Curriculum Studies in Deaf Education: Situating and Examining Open Educational Resources (OER) as Curriculum Superseding Materials (Poster 3)

Wed, April 23, 9:00 to 10:30am MDT (9:00 to 10:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2A

Abstract

To repair the longstanding dilemma where traditional curricula marginalize deaf epistemologies, we explore the network of curriculum studies in deaf education and situate a node about OER as deaf curriculum. Using the perspective that curriculum transcends materials allows us to examine deaf education issues from an angle which has not been adequately explored. By leveraging OER we may learn about similarities (and differences) between deaf and nondeaf (hearing) learners, which may support a broad understanding of multimodal and mutualist educational interactions. By orienting curriculum toward deafness and by leveraging deaf-nondeaf congruences, we aim to reduce the harm that imperils deaf learners and affect repair in generalized and specialized settings where deaf students interact with curricular knowledge, materials, experiences, and ideologies.
