Abstract

Recent research indicates that high school students show signs of mental and emotional distress (CDC Foundation, 2023). Enhancing school climate through social-emotional learning (SEL) programs is a way to renew mental and social-emotional health among high schoolers (Aldridge & McChesney, 2018; Cipriano et al., 2023; Wong et al., 2021). While research provides high-level information about best practices for high school SEL implementation, there is limited information on the specific implementation practices that high schools need (Cipriano et al., 2023). The authors present findings from two studies provide practical information to policy makers and district and school staff to help them choose a strong, research-based high school SEL program and common challenges with SEL program implementation and how to avoid them.
