Focusing on Form: The Process of Writing Transcription Poems

Abstract

This paper answers the question: How do you get from a qualitative interview transcript to a poem? I detail how I created transcription poems from interview transcripts in my feminist qualitative study about teachers expressing milk in schools. I give an in-depth example from one participant transcript, demonstrating the choices I made to move from transcript to polished poem. Thi session is useful to those who are using poetic inquiry in research and those interested in focusing on process across artistic genres. It relates well to the goal of the Arts and Learning Sig to share how we engage alternative arts-based research methodologies. As a published poet, I imagine this to be a "craft-based" session.
