Abstract

In this paper, we interrogate the ableist history of qualitative research to generate Cripped expanse futures. To do so, we offer a historical analysis of the legacy of qualitative research methodology, pointing to the often-tacit ableist practices that exist and persist in the field of qualitative research. We point to the potential of engaging a Cripped qualitative methodology, as we seek to work toward a future that thinks with bodyminds who “have the most to lose in becoming visible” (see Sandahl, 2014, p. 152). We offer a Cripped historical engagement that recognizes the violence of methodological decisions and trajectories already established, while continuing to turn towards care where it remains possible to roll towards diverse futures of joy and community.
