Blending Brayboy, Cajete, and Eisner: Cultivating Culturally Relevant STEM Curriculum Through the CIRCLES Alliance

Thu, April 24, 3:35 to 5:05pm MDT (3:35 to 5:05pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 711

Abstract

This paper presentation shares early findings and insights from the CIRCLES Alliance, a National Science Foundation-funded initiative addressing the underrepresentation of Indigenous students in STEM fields. Focusing on North Dakota, the authors explore engaging Tribal communities and promoting cultural understanding in STEM education. Surveys and interviews with stakeholders assess educational challenges and successes of Indigenous students in STEM. Five themes emerge from the analysis, forming the foundation for a teacher institute to develop culturally relevant STEM resources. The research holds significance in advancing culturally responsive education and promoting sustainable practices by incorporating Indigenous ways of knowing in STEM. The study aims to foster broader dialogue for meaningful and accessible STEM education for Indigenous students.
