Descent, Play, and Pluralism: Lessons From an APISA (Asian, Pacific Islander, and South Asian) Literary and Art Community

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2C

Abstract

This project examines the role and impact of the Asian, Pacific Islander, and South Asian (APISA) zine community, Descent, utilizing a critical qualitative approach with life history narratives and participatory methodologies. The study highlights the power of storytelling in shaping identity and challenges the traditional constructs of literacy, emphasizing literary and linguistic pluralism. Through collaborative research with the zine's founders, Nancy and Long, the project explores how their values of pluralism and play have shaped the community. The findings suggest that such values foster a more complex understanding of APISA identities and art, promoting joy and self-expression. The work underscores the potential for reimagining literary and artistic education to support multifaceted identity exploration.
