Therapy Through Development: Implementing the Vygotskian ECE Program in Russia and the USA

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

Most of the attempts to implement a Vygotskian-based curriculum across the world emphasized its value for students’ cognitive gains, however, the approaches to such a curriculum from the perspective of remedy and repair are few if not nonexistent. The proposed presentation will focus on a lesser-known aspect of development-oriented education rooted in the Vygotskian and post-Vygotskian framework: its potential for serving as therapy for young children with trauma while at the same time promoting their learning and development. The presenters will discuss their experience of implementing a Vygotskian-based ECE curriculum in Russia and the USA with young children including the ones who had lived through various kinds of traumatic experiences
