Examining Race in Leadership Preparation: A Review of the Literature

Abstract

This proposed literature review has three focus areas (1) race and racism as social constructs, including the centrality of race for the US, schools as microcosms of society, and the manifestation of racism in US educational system. (2) school leader’s role in combating racial injustice, including the relationship between school leaders’ practices and outcomes of Black and Brown students, the values, beliefs, dispositions, skills, knowledge, and practices of racially just school leaders, assessment of school leaders’ racial-justice practices, and the school leader’s preparation for addressing racial justice. (3) Leadership preparation programs design and delivery in support of racial equity, including elements of programs that focus on race and racial equity, and assessment of students and programs for racial justice.
