Enhancing AI Literacy for Minority High School Students: Mixed Outcomes and Insights for Effective Teaching Strategies

Sun, April 27, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 709

Abstract

This study aimed to address the need for AI literacy education among minority students by designing and implementing AI lessons for 36 Black high school students and 5 teachers. Data from pre-and post-surveys, teacher feedback, and field notes showed mixed results, with significant improvements in AI knowledge for some students but declines for others. Teachers highlighted the appropriateness of activities provided to students but noted engagement issues during lengthy lectures, suggesting the incorporation of more videos, hands-on activities, and robotics. The findings suggest effective strategies for teaching AI literacy to minority students, potentially leading to more inclusive AI development.
