Abstract

Through a discussion of social media with preservice educators, this study leverages critical media literacy skills to support civic engagement. Anchored in critical theory and Freirean pedagogy, we emphasize critical consumption and production of media to empower educators and students. The study engaged preservice teachers in reflective dialogues and discussion-based strategies about short-form videos on social media. Qualitative data was collected through open-ended pre- and post-surveys from eleven preservice educators, examining shifts in their confidence and instructional strategies. Results indicate enhanced media literacy competence, leading to more critical engagement and improved pedagogical approaches. This study highlights the importance of media literacy in teacher preparation, suggesting its potential to significantly influence educational practices and democratic participation in diverse educational settings.
