Black Joy as Racialized Resistance in STEM Education

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

The practice and impact of Black Joy in STEM education remain on the fringes of the STEM ecosystem despite its potential to foster a richer understanding of Black history and life amid oppression and positive experiences for Black students (Adams, 2022; Tichavakunda, 2022). Recent studies suggest that Black Joy can counter anti-Black norms in STEM disciplines (Lawson, 2024), offering a counter-narrative celebrating resistance, community, and cultural pride. Incorporating Black history, contributions, and Joy into STEM curricula is crucial for strengthening Black identities, fostering belonging, boosting pride, enhancing engagement, and promoting success in STEM (Flowers & Banda, 2016; Williams, 2022). This study explores how centering Black Joy can transform STEM education, providing a more inclusive and empowering experience for Black students.
