Successful Learning Environments for Reducing Underachievement in Europe: Opportunities for Remedy and Repair

Thu, April 24, 5:25 to 6:55pm MDT (5:25 to 6:55pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2E

Abstract

This study builds on good practices and positive experiences of 20 single schools from 10 EU countries that have successfully reversed high rates of underachievement and early school leaving, thus providing learning opportunities for all students to thrive. As part of a multiple case study conducted within the SCIREARLY project, results indicate that the educational practices that have improved learning outcomes and student well-being share core elements: positive and nourishing student-teacher and peer relationships, strong involvement of families and communities in students’ learning, and effective leadership and targeted support services such as counseling, especially for those systematically excluded. These findings aim to benefit more students who have suffered harm and have transformative implications for learners, educators, and policymakers.
