Teacher Noticing During an Open Lesson and Video Club Bricolage

Sun, April 27, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Open lesson is a lesson study variation where a team plans a research lesson that is observed by educators. In our open lesson adaptation, the team and two educators discussed the lesson plan, video-clips, and examples from students’ work from a research lesson. Using van Es and Sherin’s (2008) teacher noticing framework, we ask: What do teachers notice during the post-lesson reflection step? We found that participants noticed how students enacted a design justice stance. Participants used evidence to describe students’ work. Video-based discussions engaged participants in interpreting students’ ideas, a high-level stance. Participants suggested lesson modifications drawing on their expertise. The study is relevant for future implementation of the open lesson model in combination with video clubs.
