Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

Belonging in higher education is vital for student success and well-being. This paper aims to dissect the complexities of belonging, examining its diverse determinants, impacts, barriers, and strategies. A total of 133 articles were identified using the Web of Science database in August 2023, with 77 selected for full-text review and 33 for the final systematic review. Four themes in belonging were identified: (1) connectedness to peers, staff, and the institution; (2) feeling safe and part of the community; (3) being valued and accepted; and (4) diversity and inclusion. Challenges include the exclusion of diverse groups, lack of connection opportunities, and insufficient support. Effective strategies involve targeting multiple system levels, relationship-building, diverse educator practices, leveraging technology, and creating inclusive environments.
