More Than One Latinidad: Rethinking Latine/x Identities in Educational Research From an Afro-Brazilian Perspective

Abstract

Recently, educational research has started to question the limitations and contradictions of Latinidad and its impacts on the experiences of Indigenous and Afro-Latine/x groups. However, the experiences of Afro-Latine/x students are neglected in educational research, where discourses of Latine/x uniformity continue to shape theorizations of race and ethnicity in education. These gaps in knowledge are particularly problematic given the increasing diversity of K-12 schools and the lack of ethnoracial diversity in the education workforce. This study uses oral history to critically examine AfroBrazilians’ relationship with Latinidad(es) and racial identification with Latine/x identities. I build on these experiences to provide considerations for educational researchers looking to expand the conceptualization of Latinidad(es) in education scholarship.
