Abstract

This study employs educational design research to evaluate leadership outcomes from an interdisciplinary EdD program at a state university, focusing on social justice and equity within a cohort model. Operating since 2007, this program integrates critical theory and transformative leadership frameworks, aiming to prepare leaders for equity-based reforms. Data from alumni interviews and student surveys reveal five key themes: empathetic leadership, expanded problem-solving skills, increased self-confidence, application of leadership to equity reforms, and ongoing networks with peers and faculty. Findings indicate that the program’s emphasis on community building and critical reflection fosters significant intrapersonal growth and prepares graduates to effect systemic change. Recommendations include enhancing empathy-building and emotional support within doctoral programs to better support students' impact on educational equity.
