Inclusive Strategic Planning: Improving the Planning Process in Higher Education

Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

The limited diversity within academic libraries impedes full participation in-library use. Utilizing an open strategic planning framework to increase the diversity of strategic planning participants, we sought to create a more inclusive strategic planning framework that would increase the diversity of participants and improve outcomes for both individuals and the organization. We found that broadening the diversity of participants in the planning process enhanced idea generation and increased buy-in and commitment to the strategic plan overall with some expressed resentments from those traditionally exclusively included in these processes. We explore the use of research findings to remedy and repair relationships among on-campus stakeholders, sustaining positive change in an age of policy retrenchment.
