“Makes You Feel Like You Don’t Belong”: Latinx Students’ Experiences After Graduation From an HSI

Sat, April 26, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3E

Abstract

While there has been progress in increasing the enrollment, retention, and graduation rates of Hispanics/Latinx in STEMM fields, a comprehensive understanding of student experiences beyond the undergraduate level remains essential, in particular for those who were involved in undergraduate research experiences (UREs). We can gain valuable insights into the enduring effects of URES and their role in shaping students’ professional and academic journeys. This qualitative study interviewed 19 graduates of an HSI undergraduate research program about their post-graduation experiences. Participants, now in graduate school or industry, reported increased microaggressions when away from home, affecting their sense of belonging. In turn, students utilized various resources to enhance their sense of belonging, such as support groups, other peers, and family members.
