The advent of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is poised to transform English Language Learning (ELL) instruction. Research is yet needed to explore pre-service teachers’ AI knowledge base and their perspectives on how the new technology will affect their future as teachers. This mixed-methods study explored pre-service teachers’ familiarity with frequency usage of AI-powered tools and platforms, as well as their perspectives on how their roles will evolve. Survey and written reflection data suggested that participants (N = 90) enhanced their familiarity and frequency of usage after a five-week intervention on how to use AI-powered tools for ELL lesson planning. Participants showed skepticism toward GenAI, highlighting the central role of the human teacher. Implications for teacher education programs are discussed.
