Teacher Preparation Programs as an Ecosystem for Reflection and Translanguaging Pedagogy (Poster 14)

Abstract

It may take educators years to truly embody critical pedagogy such as translanguaging in their praxis, particularly because language practices can often be decontextualized from the sociopolitical and historical background of students and educators and has been taken upon as a language teaching strategy (Wei, 2024). This work explores how teacher education courses can serve as a supportive ecosystem for critical pedagogies through opportunities of reflection, learning, and practice. Teacher education programs are best situated to equip teachers and teacher candidates with the opportunities to learn new content, engage with it, and appropriately utilize it in the classroom (Brown et al., 2017; Ladson-Billings, 2017).
